Kate Elizabeth Russell’s My Dark Vanessa is a buzzy, dark, sexual novel about an advanced but unsophisticated young high school girl and her manipulative but alluring English teacher. The books vacillates between present day and the past, and shakes the core of what we know and understand about victimhood and consent. If you were fascinated by the dysfunctional attachment in The Girls (one of my absolute favorites) or couldn’t turn your head away from the creepiness of Room, this could be the book for you.
